GCA/K12 Books

We received our books in June. We already had the LA and Math from last year where we were working ahead. I am trying to get the Health part of our lessons put together for the year and figure out what supplies we are going to need.

2 year visit and Blount's Disease

June 13, 2012 Alejandro went to Dr. Childers for his 2 year check up. He weighed 33.4 lbs and was 36 1/4 inches tall with a head circumference of 49 cm. Getting big. The doctor sent us to Dr. Barber to see if there is anything going on with his legs because they are bowing. At first the peds doctor didn't think it was an issue then he saw him walking and decided to give us a referral. Dr. Barber did x-ray's and said that the tibia is growing bent and that the bowing is not the typical bowing at the knees. He is referring us to a specialist. On July 25, 2012 We went to a specialist and found out that my little man has Blount's Disease. :( Poor guy. Hopefully the brace will work to straighten out his left leg and that will be the end of it. They will be monitoring his right leg growth over the next 6 months to make sure it is ok. We hope it is able to be corrected. If left alone his lower leg bone will continue to bow out and won't grow correctly. That would end up being a disability. If the brace doesn't work then they insert a small incision in his knee and insert a plate. If that doesn't work they end up doing surgery and that consist of breaking the shin bone and resetting it. From my understanding Blount’s disease can reoccur even after the surgery. There is not a guarantee that it is going to go away or fully correct. I am hopeful that it will. When I was pregnant his kidneys were not fully developed so they monitored him for a year but that managed to work itself out. They did say he has a better chance of it being corrected since it was found early. They said Blount's Disease is caused by walking early and obesity. Alex started walking at 7 months old. After the appointment we went out to eat in Ryan’s and my little man decided to snatch a piece of chicken off of my plate and throw it back over his head and hit an older lady in the back with it. I don’t know what has gotten into him lately. He eats for two minutes and then he is throwing food. Removing him from the food doesn’t seem to be helping either. The removal stops the current issue but at the next meal he is throwing food again. Thursday July 26 I took Alex to the Health Department and he weighed 34 lbs 8 oz and was 35 1/2 inches tall. I think the height discrepancy was because the doctor’s office didn't take his shoes off when they measured him and his legs are bowing. The health department told me that Alex's hight is in the 75% and his weight is in the 90%. When they are put on the chart together his is considered in the at risk range for obesity. I wonder if his height was more accurate without the bowing of his legs if this would be different. We took Alex to get fitted for a brace on his left leg. They took all kinds of measurements and then wrapped his leg from his toes up to his thigh in a cast and allowed it to dry. Then they cut it off. Alex did well up until they were cutting the cast off of his thigh and he started to cry a little. Esperanza went to the appointment with us. According to http://www.babycenter.com/child-height-predictor Alex will be 6.4 feet at 18 years based on our first height and weight and 6 ft according to our second height and weight. I wonder what my other children will measure. :) Info on Blount's Disease. http://www.essortment.com/blounts-disease-50719.html http://www.eorthopod.com/content/blounts-disease-in-children-and-adolescents

Time4Learning

Hi, my name is Laurie and I was offered a free month of Time4Learning if I provided a review of the program after the thirty days free. I am a mom and teacher of six children. We are virtual school learners through Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA). I had two of my children participate in the Time4Learning program. I had my 8 year old 2nd grade daughter and 6 year old Kindergarten boy use Time4Learning. They both enjoyed the ability to learn online and independently. My kindergarten student enjoyed making the ABC book and playing the games. He is our gamer and these games and activities he enjoyed. He was able to print the books independently. He would even sit with his sister during her lessons and try to help her. The activities were entertaining for both children even though they were in different grades. They didn't have to sit for hours on end and listen to an adult talk. The program incorporates learning and games for each lesson. The graphics were up to date and the layout of the program is easy to manage. This was a user friendly program for me as well as my children. My children might have spent a total of 20 minutes at a time completing a lesson. I even had them complete lessons they already knew because this program was game oriented and I thought my children might pick up on areas they had struggled in. I also had them complete more than one lesson a day because they completed the lessons so quickly. The main reason I sat with my children during the first couple of lessons was so that I knew how the program ran and could make sure they could follow it. I used Time4Learning as a time filler and extra practice to go along with Georgia Cyber Academy’s curriculum. I like having the ability to go into the program and seeing exactly what my children have been doing and the areas they need extra help in. This was truly a learning experience for my children and we enjoyed using the program. We enjoyed it so much that it doesn't even seem like we have been using it for a month.

Time4Learning 1st day

Hi, We are a virtual home schooling family. This is our first year with Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA). When I saw the opportunity to try out Time4Learning for free for 30 days, I jumped on it. I have heard many families talking about Time4Learning and how they love it. We are using Time4Learning to supplement the K12 curriculum we are currently using. He is struggling with receptive language skills and phonics. I am hoping that working with this program will allow him a little more independence with learning to read. My goal is to have him reading fluently before 1st grade. I feel like he is falling behind and something has to be done.

Today was my sons 1st day of Time4Learning. He hated every minute of it but it is because he already knows the content being taught. The LA starts out teaching the letters and how they are related to print and the parts of a book. I think this is a wonderful first activity for students that are just starting out. This is something my little guy learned in PreK and we have continued to reinforce this skill all year. I wish we had started using Time4Learning at the beginning of the year. I decided to start using Time4Learning from the beginning so that if my son missed an important concept this year he will pick it up. My 2nd grade daughter hasn't started using the program as of yet but I hope to get her started soon. She is learning multiplication but she is still struggling with being fluent in addition and subtraction. We will see how it goes. Well that is it for today I will keep posting so everyone will know how my children are doing with the Time4Learning Lessons.

Time4Learning

I've been invited to try Time4Learning for one month in exchange for a candid review. My opinion will be entirely my own, so be sure to come back and read about my experience. Time4Learning can be used as a homeschool curriculum, for afterschool enrichment and for summer skill sharpening. Find out how to write your own curriculum review for Time4Learning.
