2 year visit and Blount's Disease

June 13, 2012 Alejandro went to Dr. Childers for his 2 year check up. He weighed 33.4 lbs and was 36 1/4 inches tall with a head circumference of 49 cm. Getting big. The doctor sent us to Dr. Barber to see if there is anything going on with his legs because they are bowing. At first the peds doctor didn't think it was an issue then he saw him walking and decided to give us a referral. Dr. Barber did x-ray's and said that the tibia is growing bent and that the bowing is not the typical bowing at the knees. He is referring us to a specialist. On July 25, 2012 We went to a specialist and found out that my little man has Blount's Disease. :( Poor guy. Hopefully the brace will work to straighten out his left leg and that will be the end of it. They will be monitoring his right leg growth over the next 6 months to make sure it is ok. We hope it is able to be corrected. If left alone his lower leg bone will continue to bow out and won't grow correctly. That would end up being a disability. If the brace doesn't work then they insert a small incision in his knee and insert a plate. If that doesn't work they end up doing surgery and that consist of breaking the shin bone and resetting it. From my understanding Blount’s disease can reoccur even after the surgery. There is not a guarantee that it is going to go away or fully correct. I am hopeful that it will. When I was pregnant his kidneys were not fully developed so they monitored him for a year but that managed to work itself out. They did say he has a better chance of it being corrected since it was found early. They said Blount's Disease is caused by walking early and obesity. Alex started walking at 7 months old. After the appointment we went out to eat in Ryan’s and my little man decided to snatch a piece of chicken off of my plate and throw it back over his head and hit an older lady in the back with it. I don’t know what has gotten into him lately. He eats for two minutes and then he is throwing food. Removing him from the food doesn’t seem to be helping either. The removal stops the current issue but at the next meal he is throwing food again. Thursday July 26 I took Alex to the Health Department and he weighed 34 lbs 8 oz and was 35 1/2 inches tall. I think the height discrepancy was because the doctor’s office didn't take his shoes off when they measured him and his legs are bowing. The health department told me that Alex's hight is in the 75% and his weight is in the 90%. When they are put on the chart together his is considered in the at risk range for obesity. I wonder if his height was more accurate without the bowing of his legs if this would be different. We took Alex to get fitted for a brace on his left leg. They took all kinds of measurements and then wrapped his leg from his toes up to his thigh in a cast and allowed it to dry. Then they cut it off. Alex did well up until they were cutting the cast off of his thigh and he started to cry a little. Esperanza went to the appointment with us. According to http://www.babycenter.com/child-height-predictor Alex will be 6.4 feet at 18 years based on our first height and weight and 6 ft according to our second height and weight. I wonder what my other children will measure. :) Info on Blount's Disease. http://www.essortment.com/blounts-disease-50719.html http://www.eorthopod.com/content/blounts-disease-in-children-and-adolescents
